Migs Villanueva’s art has changed and evolved, except for her favorite subject, Children. Always fascinated with young life because of their innate innocence, Migs is best known for depicting children showing her aesthetic of deliberate imperfection—a wabi-sabi sensibility, and her technique of austere simplicity using oil, pastel, and watercolor. She imbues her character sketches and illustrations with saturated lightness and refreshingly simple arrangements. She puts her subjects in activities we imagine children should do. The exuberance and innocence of childhood are expressed in a recurring Migs Villanueva motif: that of three dots representing the eyes, nose, and mouth. Having resided in the countryside, Migs is more serene and focused as the ambiance of her new artist space helps prepare her creative body and soul for when she paints children. As not many may know, as a mother of four, and now a grandmother, the children depicted are mostly from her own childhood and these cherished memories provide her a treasure trove of insights that fuel her art.
